Q. What is injected into the knee?

A. We utilize an FDA approved product called Supartz. This substance is similar to the knee’s natural lubricant and can be used to replace the fluids which you may have lost over time or due to injury.

Q. Is this the same as Synvisc (or other brands)?

A. We utilize Supartz because it has a lighter molecular weight. What this means is that Supartz has a higher probability of crossing the synovial membrane of the knee and supplementing your existing synovial fluid. Supartz is also a cleaner, more natural product. Hyalgan is also utilized and is a similar product.

Q. I’ve already done this and it did not work.

A. I understand your concern; please allow me to ease your mind. Historically, most facilities injected these products by hand. At our facility we use a new technology called fluoroscopic guidance that allows us to see into your knee in real time. It’s like an X-ray but instead of needing to be developed it shows up right on a screen. This allows the doctor to see the needle travel directly where it needs to go. If your past doctor did not use this technology, how can you be sure the lubricant actually got to where it needed to be?

Q. How long will the treatment last?

A. Although the length of our treatment plans vary based upon your condition most patients require a series of 5 injections. The doctor can explain the necessary frequency of your treatment during your risk-free, no-cost consultation.

Q. How long will it take before I experience relief?

A. This varies by patient as no two cases are exactly the same. That said, some patients experience relief almost immediately after the first injection.

Q. How long will my relief last?

A. This depends on your condition. For many patients relief lasts years, while others may need to return periodically for additional treatments. Medicare and most insurance carriers allow for two courses of injections per year in the event your pain returns.

Q. Will I need follow up visits after my treatment is completed?

A. We recommend most patients return for a six month follow up visit, just to make sure everything is still okay.

Q. Are there any side effects?

A. There are very few side effects or adverse drug interactions associated with the use of Supartz. Most reactions are minor and include pain at the injection site, redness, and/or swelling. We utilize a numbing agent to reduce any pain during the injection procedure.

Q. I was told nothing can help me.

A. I understand your frustration, however there is hope. We see patients that have been told their only option is “to learn to live with the pain” all the time, or they must replace the knee with joint replacement surgery. That said, we have been able to help many find relief. The doctor can review your particular case and determine what, if anything, we can do to help. There is no obligation for this consultation.

Q. I’ve already had knee surgery, can you still help me?

A. Have you had one or both knees replaced? (If One) Although we cannot inject Supartz into your artificial knee, we may still be able to help you with the other. (If Both) Total knee replacement is a contraindication for Supartz injections. However, we do more than just injections here. The doctor can still see you for a risk-free, no-cost consultation to review alternative treatment options that will not require additional surgery.

Q. Will Insurance or Medicare pay for this treatment?

A. Our treatment program is covered by Medicare and most major insurance carriers. I’m sure you don’t like surprises, and we don’t either. That’s why at the time of your consultation we want you to know just what your options are, including any financial factors. If you are a candidate for care we want you to know exactly what your financial responsibilities will be going forward, if any.

Q. I no longer drive, do you offer transportation services?

A. If you do not have a friend or family member who can drive you, I would be happy to provide you with a list of medical transportation companies in your area. In many cases your insurance may even provide coverage for these services and associated costs. If you call the provider services number on the back of your insurance card they can provide you with additional details of your coverage and benefits.
